Az Életek – sorsok – történetek a modern magyar társadalom változó világát mutatja be azoknak az embereknek a nézőpontjából, akik a történelem nagy fordulatait saját életükben, családi kapcsolataikban, munkahelyi közösségeikben és mindennapi döntéseikben tapasztalták meg. A kötet tanulmányai a 18. század végétől a 20. század második feléig követik nyomon különböző társadalmi helyzetű családok, munkások, hivatalnokok és helyi közösségek sorsát. A személyes történetek mögött a magyar társadalom szélesebb átalakulásai rajzolódnak ki. Az iparosodás, az urbanizáció, a háborúk, a politikai rendszerváltások és az államszocializmus új élethelyzeteket, alkalmazkodási kényszereket, felemelkedési lehetőségeket és veszteségeket teremtettek. A tanulmányok azt mutatják meg, hogyan alakultak a családi hagyományok, a foglalkozási pályák, a társadalmi törekvések, a politikai kötődések és az egyéni identitások a változó történelmi körülmények között. A kötet egyszerre kínál gazdag történeti tudást és személyes emberi történeteket. Az olvasó családok, munkahelyi közösségek és egyének életútjain keresztül ismerheti meg a mobilitás, az alkalmazkodás, a társadalmi felemelkedés, a státuszvesztés és az újrakezdés sokféle tapasztalatát.

Studies in Social History

Lives – Fates – Stories explores a fundamental question in modern Hungarian social history: how can large-scale political, economic and social transformations be understood more fully through the lives of those who, through their everyday decisions, strategies of adaptation and community ties, were themselves participants in these processes? Alongside political and institutional historical perspectives, the studies foreground the personal dimension of lived history. Their principal subjects are ordinary actors, families and working-class communities that have largely remained at the margins of historical memory and historiography. The volume demonstrates that the study of individual life courses, family relationships and generational experiences is an important tool of social-historical interpretation, bringing into sharper focus the complex interconnections among social structure, mobility, identity, political behaviour and adaptation.
The author describes the volume’s theoretical and methodolo-gical framework as personal history. This approach is connected to international currents in microhistory, the history of everyday life, life-history research and the study of ego-documents, while placing particular emphasis on the long-term analytical investigation of individuals, families and multiple generations. Beyond reconstructing biographical data and family relationships, the research seeks to interpret the decision-making situations, networks of relationships, cultural patterns, material opportunities and constraints that shaped individual life courses. The studies trace the ways in which individual actions intersected with historical structures, institutional conditions and the wider social environment. In this respect, the approach is close to the historical-sociological practice of “thick description”: detailed reconstructions of individual cases reveal the characteristic features, questions and interconnections of social life.
The studies draw on a deliberately diverse body of sources. Documents produced by institutions—including registers, school and employment records, official files, electoral registers, probate and court records, company documents and press sources—are used alongside private papers, letters, diaries, autobiographical writings, memoirs, interviews and family photographs to enable the piecemeal reconstruction of life courses. Reading these sources together makes it possible to verify data, compare differing perspectives and interpret the relationships among self-representation, family memory and institutional record-keeping. The photographs, extracts from letters and diaries, and documentary reproductions included in the volume function as historical sources in their own right, offering information about housing conditions, material culture, family relationships, workplace and community embeddedness, and the ways individuals understood and represented themselves.
The case studies follow changing social positions from the late eighteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century. Particular attention is devoted to the consequences of industrialisation, urbanisation, war, repeated changes of political regime and state socialism, all of which reshaped everyday lifeworlds. The histories of families and individuals from different social backgrounds reveal mobility as a complex process, often marked by interruptions, reversals and renewed efforts at social advancement. Across lower-noble, peasant, working-class, petty-bourgeois and lower-middle-class settings, the studies identify status loss, gradual reconstruction, partial upward mobility and enforced decline alike. Education, vocational training, military service, employment in state institutions or private companies, marriage ties, changes of residence and local networks influenced the opportunities available for advancement in diverse ways. At the same time, life courses were shaped by wartime losses, premature death, economic crises, political persecution and institutional constraints. The multi-generational perspective shows how family patterns—occupational traditions, religious attachments, norms of everyday life and social aspirations—were transmitted, transformed and invested with new meanings under changing historical conditions.
The volume also addresses the diverse social and political experiences of the industrial working class. Working-class life was structured by differing workplace and residential environments, occupational hierarchies, religious and cultural affiliations, community organisations, and individual and family interests. These factors gave rise to varied forms of political orientation and social behaviour. Twentieth-century regime changes and reconfigurations of power created new situations of everyday adaptation, identity formation, survival and social integration. Political behaviour therefore becomes intelligible through the interaction of local society, the world of work and personal circumstances.
The volume’s central conclusion is that the study of historical change on a human scale enriches social-historical interpretation. Individual destinies reveal the personal consequences, local variants and differing experiences of macro-level processes. The perspective of personal history makes both the persistence of social structures and the agency of individuals more readily perceptible. It shows how people lived, made decisions, adapted, occasionally resisted, and sought new opportunities within their family, workplace and community relationships. From this perspective, the studies offer a nuanced, source-critical and accessible account of the changing world of modern Hungarian society.
